Carmelita Reyes was a founding faculty member at Life Academy of Health and Bioscience in Oakland, California, a small biotech theme school with less than 300 students. In addition to teaching 10th grade humanities, journalism, and photography, Ms. Reyes also served as the school librarian, oversaw the computer lab, and wrote grants. In recognition of her work at the academy, Ms. Reyes was named “Oakland Unified School District Teacher of the Year” in 2005.
A former New York City school teacher in the Dominican immigrant community, Ms. Reyes holds a BA in Economics from Princeton University, an M.Ed from Columbia University, and has studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Sailaja previously worked for the Boston Public Schools’ Instructional Technology office. She managed a nationally-recognized math and technology integration project, piloted online and blended professional development, and co-authored the district’s long-term technology plan. After leaving Boston, she decided to take the long way back home to the Bay Area by traveling east through Europe, South Africa, and Asia until she landed in California. Sailaja was a founding teacher at OIHS, teaching math and technology classes.
Sailaja has a BS in Business Administration and a minor in Religious Studies from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley and a Masters in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In 2008, she received an award as the Rookie Teacher of the Year for the Oakland Unified School District.
