Alison Hanks-Sloan

Principal

Alison Hanks-Sloan is the new design leaders/principal at the Prince George’s International High School. She first taught high school English as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the highlands of Ethiopia in 1995. In 1998, she was a Peace Corps Fellow at the George Washington University and started teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at a high school in Prince George’s County. From 2001- 2004, she spent three years in California directing grant funded education projects for teachers and immigrant adults as well as teaching ESOL and multicultural education courses at community colleges. She returned to PGCPS in 2004 as supervisor of the ESOL program. As the program grew so did her role. She became coordinating supervisor of international programs, supporting 18,000 English Language Learners, welcoming 6,000 new immigrant families annually, managing the Title III grant, and leading a central office team of 32 and over 400 school-based and temporary staff. Alison earned her B.A. in cultural anthropology from the University of New Mexico. Her M.Ed. in ESOL/bilingual education is from the George Washington University She is currently a doctoral student at the University of Maryland examining successful factors that support Latino high school ELLs. She is also married to her best friend and the mother of four energetic guys.
